We continue our grand journey across the United States, and in this episode we finally leave West Virginia and reach Tennessee. Unfortunately, the depressing views didn't end in Welch; they followed me all the way to the state line. My route took me through the rather isolated mountainous areas of McDowell County, home to dozens of former coal towns. After coal production declined and the mines closed, all of them found themselves literally on the margins of life. Everyone who could left, and those who remained live very poor and rather strange lives. And all this takes place in the most beautiful places, on the banks of picturesque rivers and surrounded by magnificent mountains. West Virginia once again struck me with its absolutely incredible combination of beauty and poverty. I completed this journey last winter and am now posting it as the episodes are completed. Some are dedicated to specific interesting places, while others, like this one, are road trip vignettes from a car window. They may not be as interesting as stories about specific locations, but they do give a good idea of ​​what the states I'm traveling through are like.
