A country often considered a benchmark for being "more advanced" than Indonesia, it turns out, has a much heavier debt burden than previously imagined. According to the Malaysian Ministry of Finance's official response to parliament in mid-July 2026, Malaysia's federal debt stood at 63.1% of GDP—still above the internationally safe threshold of 60%. Furthermore, Malaysian household debt reached 1.73 trillion ringgit, or 84.4% of GDP. This means that Malaysians' personal debt obligations are almost equivalent to the country's entire annual economic value. Even more shocking, Malaysia still has to repay the remaining 8.9 billion ringgit debt resulting from the state investment fund corruption scandal that occurred more than a decade ago—and will not be repaid until 2039. Children born today there will grow up watching their country still pay off debts inherited from past corruption. So where does Indonesia stand? Our debt ratio was recorded at 40.75% of GDP as of March 2026—technically much lower. But that doesn't mean it's problem-free: debt interest burdens absorb nearly a quarter of tax revenue, foreign exchange reserves have fallen by around $15 billion in six months, and the rising debt ratio trend is projected to continue until 2029.
