Special Forces Axes by RMJ Tactical! Modern Combat Tools

Unboxing and first impressions of a RMJ Tactical special forces axe! The Kestrel! I’ve been talking all year about getting an RMJ tomhawk, hatchet or axe for review and here we go. In my case it is less about special operations and more about special price tag coming in at over $500. Is this axe worth the money? Will it hold up to its name and the reputation it has in the tacticool community? Unboxing this axe was fun. Not every day do Dave and I get to unbox such an expensive axe that has this type of hype and reputation. Upon opening the box you get a few things before you make it to the axe. A small guide book, some stickers and a certificate of authorship stamped with a wax RMJ tactical seal! Which I will say is a nice touch. But we are here for the axe! The RMJ Kestrel did not disappoint! Right out of the box i immediately noticed the circumference of the handle which was great and the G10 grip panels that gave great grip without it being too grippy. It feels like a grip you can bare down on if needed but will still offer a clean release for axe throwing or tactical use. The added ridges on the steel axe handle are placed so you get grip if you want to choke up on the axe and also down on the grip for extra stabilization for chopping/swinging and axe throwing. I went with the 80crv2 model over the S7 to start with RMJ tactical axes because I really wanted to test the edge quality and cutting edge retention. I want to see how sharp I can get this cutting edge with 80crv2. And how well it will hold up to axe throwing to include hard axe throws. The spike on the back has a nice length and has some thickness to it. It is really more of a sharp point then it is a thinner cutting edge. Maybe for piercing or sticking/digging into something is where this spike would work best. Survival or tactical/bushcraft work with this spike was my immediate thought. The Kestrel by RMJ tactical in the 80crv2 form is very light at only 19 ounces. Which should make for a very nimble and maneuverable throwing axe. I am curious to see with the lighter axe weight how mich that will affect edge penetration and the overall performance of the axe compared to the S7 model which is a bit heavier. Of course this axe is handle heavy with a full tang and my rotation test shows we may get some noticeable wobble of the axe in the air when thrown. Overall first impressions of the Kestrel axe or tomahawk by RMJ tactical did not disappoint. The only initial issue or con I could find was that the cutting edge was pretty dull. In hindsight it is not that big of an issue. I would have adjusted the cheeks and the cutting edge to my liking anyway like I do with every axe but for that kind of money, I would have expected a more “use right out of the box” feel. Can you use this axe right out of the box? Probably not if you want to chop, cut or axe throw with it. Come back for part two when we put this axe to the test!
