(9 Feb 2012) SHOTLIST 1. Wide of media interviewing former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Nasheed, former Maldives President: "I understand that there is an arrest warrant on me and that they're coming to pick me up, as I understand. So, the situation is that they're going to arrest me but I am certain that you cannot suppress anything by brute force. Sentiment and ideas - and ideologies - live and they will live stronger and I'm sure that they will breed and we will be able to come back. And this country will survive and I know my party, I know my people and I understand them and they do not want this to happen." 3. Cutaway of news conference ++AUDIO AS INCOMING++ 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Nasheed, former Maldives President: "No I'm not thinking about leaving the country for my own safety. How can I do that? If I leave the whole country will go to the dogs, all these people will lose. I can't do that, I'm afraid I can't do that." 5. Cutaway of news conference ++MUTE++ 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Nasheed, former Maldives President: "I am very certain that the Maldivian Democratic Party will win the next election very handsomely and I will seek candidacy from the party, and I believe the party, hopefully, will give me that candidacy." 7. Cutaway of media ++MUTE++ 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Nasheed, former Maldives President: "(The public) Align themselves with an ideology that they like, that's what we call democracy. If they agree to the principles, if they agree to the policies of our party and the manner in which we are doing it, they will of course support us and they have been supporting us for a long time. They want us back because of the good things that we have done." 9. Nasheed talking on phone in a conversation said to be with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh STORYLINE: The former Maldives president was remaining defiant on Thursday even as a Maldives court issued an arrest warrant for him. Mohamed Nasheed resigned this week but he later insisted he had been ousted by coup plotters in a political dispute that sparked rioting. Speaking from his Male home on Thursday , Nasheed said he expected to be arrested shortly but was confident that the Maldives people would not accept his incarceration for long. "You cannot suppress anything by brute force. Sentiment and ideas - and ideologies - live and they will live stronger and I'm sure that they will breed and we will be able to come back," he said. "I know my party, I know my people and I understand them and they do not want this to happen," he added. A police refused to disclose the grounds for the criminal court's warrant, or say when Nasheed would be arrested. Later, Police Commissioner Abdullah Riaz said it was not clear if the warrant was constitutional. He declined to provide details, but said the warrant's legality was still being examined. What really happened to Nasheed, a onetime human rights campaigner, remains unclear. He resigned Tuesday, after police joined months of street protests against his rule and soldiers defected, but insisted he had not been forced from power. He was replaced by his vice president, Mohammed Waheed Hassan. On Wednesday, though, Nasheed said he had been ousted in a coup, and his supporters rampaged through the streets of the Maldives capital to demand Nasheed's return, and more attacked police stations in remote parts of this 1,200-island archipelago nation off the southern coast of India. Both the new government and the country's military insists there was no coup.
