When it is said that fish prefer "soft" or "hard" water, it is referring to GH (and not KH). Note: GH, KH, and pH form the Bermuda Triangle of water chemistry. Although the three properties are different, they all interact with each other to varying degrees, making it difficult to adjust one without affecting the other. For this reason, beginners are advised NOT to touch these parameters unless absolutely necessary. As an example, "hard" water often comes from limestone aquifers. Limestone contains calcium carbonate, which, when dissolved in water, increases both GH (from calcium) and KH (from carbonate). Increasing the KH component typically also increases the pH. Conceptually, KH acts as a "sponge" absorbing the acid present in the water, increasing the water's pH. Water hardness follows the following rules. The unit of measurement dH stands for "degree hardness," while ppm stands for "parts per million," which is roughly equivalent to mg/L of water. One dH unit is equivalent to 17.8 ppm of CaCO3. Most kits give hardness in units of CaCO3; this means that the hardness is equal to the amount of CaCO3 in the water, but it doesn't mean that it actually comes from CaCO3.
