A Case Study of "Silverlake Life: The View From Here"

As part of our weekly D-Word F2Fs over the past 3 years and counting, we've recorded a number of case studies of acclaimed recent documentaries. But this is the first where we're focusing on a classic doc from the past. Few documentaries have had the lasting impact of "Silverlake Life: The View From Here". It's a groundbreaking, “extraordinarily moving” (LA Times) video diary of life with AIDS, told with exceptional candor and humor by longtime couple Tom Joslin and Mark Massi, which celebrates the power of love in the face of a devastating illness. Winner of the 1993 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and Freedom of Expression Award, it was released in 80 theaters by Zeitgeist Films, kicked off that season’s POV series on PBS, and went on to win countless awards, including a Peabody and the Prix Italia. It was named One of the Top Ten Films of the Year by the L.A. Times, USA Today, Chicago Reader and Boston Globe, and One of the Best Films of the Decade by the Village Voice and Utne Reader. Not bad for a film shot on a S-VHS video camcorder! Joining us to discuss the film from Tom and Mark’s conception through its unique completion and distribution are producer-director-editor Peter Friedman, co-producers Doug Block and Jane Weiner, and former head of POV Ellen Schneider, who created an unprecedented, pre-internet outreach campaign that powerfully opened the world’s eyes to the AIDS crisis.
