DJ Ron & MC 5ive-0 | Classic '91 Hardcore Music | Hardcore FM 88.7 | Thurs 2nd May 1991
Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. Big up DJ Warbo for this rare set. Hardcore FM took over the frequency of 88.7FM/88.75FM from Sunrise FM around 1991. Sunrise FM was popular with the Acid House crowd but the introduction of breakbeats saw the new wave of Hardcore music captivate the masses across London, its surrounding counties and nationwide. This set was before DJ Ron, DJ SL, MC Five-0 and MC Moose joined Kool FM in 1992. They were later known as the A Team and Supreme Team and dubbed the godfathers of the Jungle Movement. Hardcore FM only managed to stay on the FM dial for about a year and went off air around 1992. This show was recorded during the local elections of Thurs 2nd May 1991, MC Five-0 has a dig at local politicians and presents his distrust of politics and the establishment. Unsurprisingly, this was the "Hardcore Generation" who came from the illegal warehouse rave movement which was an act of dissent to the system that led the country into recession in 1991 after the fat cat boom of the 80s with the mass sale of public assets for next to nothing. 5ive-0 sends shouts to the raving crew, to events and their organisers, like: Back To The Future, Biology (Clubology @Tasco Warehouse), Distortion (by Bongo Fury @Sedgewick Studios, Homerton, Hackney), Weekend World: Heaven On Earth (which held raves in aircraft hangars), Telepathy (which held nights @Marshgate Lane, and @Kings Farm Airfield). DJ Ron starts of the set with a "peace mission" address to help stop trouble that was brewing up in east London between Dalston crew and Leyton crew. Where he called for a stop to all violence and to rave together as one like they did during the Acid House days. Throughout this set you get a glimpse of the Ragga/Dancehall influences that started to creep into the Hardcore sound. Though some say Jungle started as early as 1991 many people at the time referred to this era has Hardcore music. Nevertheless, its transition to Jungle music was still two to three years after this point. But at this point we saw the proliferation of many underground House, Hardcore, Breakbeat UK record labels which was also bringing about commercial interest and the success of the scene within the mainstream industry. This attracted many International ravers from all over the UK, Europe, USA and Canada. The folk of ravers of course were stigmatised for their association with experimenting with class A drugs, like Acid and Ecstasy. Although there's truth to this, the cynics always seem to overshadow true love for the music, the unity it brought with it to the community and the level of enjoyment felt. The mainstream media cooked up labels like "Illegal raves", "illegal pirate radio", "illegal drug parties" and it was tough for those involved to shrug that off. Funnily, when the major labels wanted to sign producers, singers and artists like "The Prodigy' they'd neglect all those factors only choosing to revisit them when it suited their agenda. The Hardcore scene saw some epic releases that had weekend ravers going bonkers up and down the country, with releases like: Genaside 2 - ‘Narra Mine’, DJ Excel - 'Just When You Thought It Was Safe', Satin Storm - ‘Think I’m Goin’ Out Of My Head’, 2 Bad Mice - 'Bombscare', Messiah – 'There Is No Law', M&M Ft. Rachel Wallace – 'I Feel This Way', Underkut – 'Mindless Music', Bodysnatch ‘Euphony’ Aka ‘Just For You London’, Metalheads - 'Terminator', Dance Conspiracy - Dub War, Edge One - ‘COMPNDED’, Neuromancer - Pennywise, The House Crew - 'Euphoria' (Nino's Dream), Acen - 'Trip To The Moon Part 2', XLR-8 - ‘Dub plate/Bachelor Rock’, Doc Scott - ‘The NHS EP’ Vol 2 (Disco Remix), D Livin- ‘Why’, Foul Play 'Final Illusion' (Illegal Mix), DJ Solo -'Darkage', Phuture Assassins - 'Future Sound', Sacred - 'Do It Together', Tic Tac Toe - ‘Emphemerol’, Origination - 'Break Down'.
