Mormon Leaders and Inappropriate Interviews Regarding Sexuality Pt. 2 | Ep. 822
Continuing our series on Mormon leaders and inappropriate interviews regarding sexuality, we hear from guests "Anna" and "Lara". A new petition created by past guest Sam Young seeks to provoke conversation and change around this subject. Part 1: Interview with Paul and Ann: • Mormon Leaders and Inappropriate Interview... Part 3: Maile, Ryan, and Ryan: • Mormon Leaders and Inappropriate Interview... From the petition: "For decades, it has been common practice for Bishops, Bishopric Counselors, Stake Presidents, and Stake President Counselors to pose questions of a sexual nature to children. There are reports of this happening to children as young as age 8. These questions are being asked by an older man, all alone with the child, behind closed doors and often without the knowledge or permission of the parents. Almost universally, these men have no comprehensive training. Here is a list of potential harm. All the risks below are actual consequences that have been experienced from sexual interviews with LDS children. 1. Suicide. 2. Attempted suicide. 3. Suicidal ideation. 4. Inappropriate shame and guilt. 5. Childhood filled with self loathing. 6. Adulthood filled with self loathing. 7. Normalizing children to sexual questions by adult men. (Grooming) 8. Sexual abuse. (Pedophilia) 9. Impaired sexual relations after marriage. 10. Years of recovery from childhood shaming. Often lasting decades.” Sam Young‘s petition can be found here: http://protectldschildren.org 00:00:00 Introduction 00:01:09 Sams petition & Part 3 00:02:17 Today's guest "Anna" 00:03:15 "Anna" opts not to use video 00:04:13 Anna's background 00:06:05 Anna's engagement & the bishop interview 00:08:03 Tyler waits outside, Anna confesses 00:10:37 Bishop's inappropriate questions & behavior 00:16:28 Lack of forgiveness & church's limitations 00:17:21 Anna's internal struggle & familial beliefs 00:19:02 Conflicting experiences with different bishops 00:20:55 Negative impact and relationship strain 00:26:04 Anna's self-blame & regretful feelings 00:28:05 Impact on Anna's married life with Tyler 00:32:20 Imbalance between bishop and parishioners 00:34:24 Control and power dynamics in interviews 00:35:22 Benefits of sharing experiences through podcasts 00:39:00 Lack of checks and balances, issues with lying 00:40:15 Importance of having a support person present 00:41:07 Issues of abstinence and experiences shared 00:44:59 Welcome "Lara", explaining her video absence 00:46:50 Lara's story & preparations for temple marriage 00:47:40 Interrogation by the bishop & inappropriate questions 00:50:03 Emotional distress during the interview process 00:53:03 Messy fallout with former and new bishops 00:54:46 Impact on mental health and shame culture 00:55:50 Efforts to remove harmful literature from circulation 00:56:37 Violations of confidentiality and trust 00:58:02 Influence on faith and eventual departure 00:58:43 Lingering effects on intimate relationships 01:00:38 Religious context and perspectives on sexuality 01:01:43 Advocating for women's empowerment and agency 01:04:05 Concerns about the well-being of daughters 01:05:03 Experiences of shame and cultural pressures 01:06:06 Challenges with dating culture and expectations 01:07:41 Considerations for reforming interview practices 01:09:02 Sign the petition!
