Operation Skate Tijuana: Breaking Through Cultural & Language Barriers

For the children of asylum seekers detained in Tijuana’s migrant refugee shelters, an unexpected delivery of 100 new skateboards, and a visit from the all-female skate community GRLSWIRL made for a rare joyful moment. One of GRLSWIRL’s members, Tijuana local Libertad Velarde, noted how the kids “were allowed to be kids again” simply through learning how to skate, and that these moments of laughter broke through all cultural and language barriers.
