A fruit and vegetable shop in Nagoya that has been in business for 60 years. Large melons and cherries that shine with vibrant color. The shop is packed with carefully selected fruits. However, the owner, Mr. Suzuki, has a problem... the soaring prices of imported fruits. The price increase isn't limited to fruit; orange juice is also affected... This is footage from two years ago. One manufacturer's 100% fruit juice, apple and grape juices cost around 140 yen, while orange juice was nearly double that at 279 yen. Not only did prices rise, but many manufacturers suspended sales. Japan relies almost entirely on imports for the orange juice used as raw material. Nearly half of that comes from Brazil in South America. São Paulo, a major orange-producing region. We visited an open-air market that supports the daily lives of the citizens. In Brazil, just like in Japan, orange prices have soared. Why has this happened? An association comprised of orange juice exporters from all over Brazil. We were able to speak with its head. The representative said, "There was a period when production was difficult due to climate change. The harvest from 2024 to 2025 was the lowest in 30 years." Looking at orange production figures, 2024 saw a record-breaking poor harvest. Consequently, the amount available on the market decreased. Due to the global shortage of orange juice, market prices soared fivefold at their peak. Countries around the world competed for the dwindling supply of oranges, creating an unprecedented situation that could be described as a "fight for the oranges." But why did production plummet in the first place? To investigate the cause, we visited an orange orchard boasting an impressive size equivalent to 39 Vantelin Dome Nagoyas. There, we witnessed…a harsh reality. An unprecedented threat was engulfing orange farmers. Greening disease: driving orange farmers to the brink. This disease, which affects only citrus fruits, is causing serious damage in production areas worldwide. In Brazil, since its first appearance in 2004, the incidence rate has been steadily increasing with no sign of slowing down. Why has it spread so far? We consulted an expert familiar with pests and diseases. It is said that citrus psyllids, which feed on bacteria contained in the sap of trees infected with greening disease, spread the infection by feeding on the sap of healthy trees. (Up to this point: 1 minute 52 seconds) Expert: "Currently, there is no cure for this disease. The only way to prevent the disease from spreading is to take measures against the psyllids." Greening disease is truly considered an "incurable disease." Rising temperatures have allowed psyllids to multiply, and coupled with their resistance to insecticides, the infection has spread as a result. Orange farmers continue to battle this incurable disease, struggling against unprecedented environmental challenges.
