Located in south-central Alaska, Talkeetna sits about 115 miles north of #anchorage at the confluence of three glacial rivers: the Susitna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna Rivers. This unique location made the town an important transportation hub during Alaska’s early railroad and mining days — and today, it’s a must-stop destination along the famous Parks Highway. If you’re driving from Anchorage, simply head north on the George Parks Highway, also known as Alaska Route 3. After roughly two and a half hours of scenic driving through boreal forest and mountain landscapes, take the clearly marked Talkeetna Spur Road exit near Milepost 98. Follow the spur road about 14 miles west, and you’ll arrive in downtown Talkeetna. The #parks highway itself is one of Alaska’s great road trips, connecting Anchorage to Fairbanks and offering some of the best opportunities to see Denali on clear days. Many travelers stop here as a basecamp before visiting Denali National Park, located about two hours farther north. Talkeetna is famous not just for its scenery but also for outdoor adventure — especially salmon fishing. During the summer months, anglers come from around the world to fish for king salmon, silver salmon, and rainbow trout in the Susitna River system. Local guides offer jet-boat fishing excursions, and visitors can often watch fishermen casting directly from the riverbanks near town. Another uniquely Alaskan activity you may encounter is salmon snaring, permitted during specific seasonal runs when fish populations are strong. Always check current Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations before participating, as rules and timing vary each year.
