16 June 2026 • Orchid bloom watch: What's about to flower?

This week in the orchid collection, it's all about buds, spikes, and upcoming blooms. In the cool tent, Masdevallia Machu Picchu is preparing a spectacular display with multiple spikes emerging, while Miltoniopsis Lillian Nakamoto is developing two promising flower spikes. I also share an update on my Nepenthes (rajah × edwardsiana), whose newest pitcher is shaping up to be a giant. In the warm tent, several Cattleya-type orchids are keeping things interesting, including Cattleya Pulcherrima, Cattleya trianae 'Cashen's', and Rhyncholaelia Aristocrat. One of my favorite plants, Bulbophyllum medusae 'Miami', is sending up several spikes, and Vanda falcata 'Hakusan' is gearing up for its summer bloom season. There's also a look at a newly acquired Tillandsia funckiana beginning to bloom. Finally, we take a quick tour outside to check on the summer garden, including blooming Clivia miniata, a long-awaited emergence from Amorphophallus konjac, the Jade Plant, succulents, native prairie plantings, and more.
