Sticks and Stones…and Words can hurt you: the Nocebo Effect | Jeremy Howick | TEDxBonnSquareSalon

NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers might find this talk helpful, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of mental health. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... Based on his personal life Jeremy wanted to discover the scientific basis for the belief effect. In medicine, the belief effect is called the placebo effect. A placebo is like a sugar pill that can work because people believe it does. It’s as powerful as some drugs for making headaches and back pain go away. Jeremy Howick as he describes himself is an Oxford University nerd whose mission is to empower people and corporations to be happier and healthier. He is the director of the Oxford University Empathy Programme, whose mission is to introduce a dose of empathy into all healthcare encounters. Jeremy has written an Amazon #1 bestseller Doctor You, won a bunch of teaching awards, won a silver medal for Canada at the Commonwealth Games, and teaches yoga. He has published 100 academic articles and recently designed a trial to help reduce back pain that was featured on a BBC Horizon Documentary. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
