Playthrough: D.W. the Picky Eater/Arthur's Adventures with D.W. - Part 1
Nothing seen here is my property, and I own no rights to this game. Please support the companies who made these by buying their products! Played by: Mr. Eight-Three-One A playthrough of D.W. the Picky Eater, also released as Arthur's Adventures with D.W. (this playthrough used the former), and the last Living Books game ever released. This game was made without Brøderbund - instead, it was developed by Media Station, with the Living Books name slapped onto it. It really shows. Horribly. It's a very mediocre game, and pretty much forgot everything that made Living Books games so great to begin with. It's incredibly dull, there's too few click spots on each page, the game did a terrible job of trying to bring the story to life (i.e. mediocre animation), it's not faithful to any of the older games, and basically feels like a quickly thrown together game with the Living Books name plastered on it. Oh, let's not forget D.W.'s voice, either. If you came in expecting a good game, you will be disappointed, because, quite honestly, this isn't a worthy addition to the series. It actually makes me glad they re-released it without the Living Books name, because it doesn't deserve to have that kind of label. Anyway, this is half of the game. This will only be two parts long. As mediocre as the game is, enjoy the video anyway. Edit: I think I know the whole story (no pun intended) as to why this game turned out the way it did, and how Living Books got cancelled. This was made shortly after The Learning Company bought out Brøderbund, and only used the Brøderbund name for marketing purposes. When they did this, they got rid of about 500 Brøderbund employees, which explains why almost none of the original Living Books team is listed in the credits. I imagine TLC wanted to continue the success of Living Books now that the whole team was gone, which I'd say is fine. But outsourcing it to Media Station isn't the right way to do it, considering they were known for making inferior clones. Something tells me the game either didn't sell well (which would explain why it has very few views in relation to all the other Arthur videos on this account) or they just weren't satisfied with the end product, or felt it wasn't a series worth continuing. They did try though, and it's pretty sad the Living Books series had to fold this way. The upcoming iOS ports do show some promise though. There are talks about continuing the series once those are finished. Right now it's got a long way to go, but it's a possibility. D.W. the Picky Eater is (C) 1998 Living Books/Wanderful Storybooks and (C) 1995 Marc Brown.
