NANKHUMWA “AKAIDI OMWE AWATULUTSA KU PRISON AYAMBA KUVUTITSA” PETER MUKHITO WAYANKHA IZI| PARLIAMENT

Member of Parliament for Mulanje Central Constituency, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has attributed the rise in crime to the increasing number of inmates released through various presidential pardons. Nankhumwa made the remarks in Parliament during Question Time directed at the Ministry of Homeland Security. According to Nankhumwa, crime rates tend to increase whenever such pardons are granted, suggesting there is a link between the two. While acknowledging the concern, Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito said presidential pardons are granted in consultation with other ministries, including the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Gender. However, Mukhito said the government is implementing various measures to equip inmates with vocational skills before their release to help them reintegrate into society and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
