(YouTube earnings ~€140/month!) 15:47 – Am I harming the cause? (What's the essence? Tell me!) 16:53 – Populism? (First criticize reach, then demand – what exactly!?) Q: Defined like that, the essence of Zen would merely be a synonym for existence and therefore completely superfluous. The interesting essence for a person is rather that the fragmentation of existence into different "things" (like subject and object) is just an illusion. An insurmountable illusion that makes life what it is. I also have a question: Why don't teachers like you try to clearly and concisely identify the essence(s), but instead always delve into history and all the surrounding cultural context? Is your goal to be a history teacher, or do you want to enlighten as many people as possible? If I show videos like this to someone who has no interest in Zen or Buddhism in general, this unsexy drivel is quickly dismissed as esoteric rubbish. And I can't even blame them. My guess is that all this trivial stuff simply fills most of your "working time," and that's the only way you can earn a decent income as teachers. Good for you, bad for "the cause." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can hardly explain it any other way. The core tenets are simple, and I wish they were conveyed more simply.
