Los últimos de Filipinas y la guerra con Estados Unidos
In our History Dialogues series, we present "The Last Ones of the Philippines" in a talk featuring: 🎙José María Fernández Palacios (Complutense University of Madrid and Spanish Association for Pacific Studies) 🎙Luis Eugenio Togores Sánchez (CEU San Pablo University) 🎙Jesús Valbuena (author of the blog baleria.com/wordpress) For context: On April 21, 1898, the Spanish-American War began, a conflict that, in theory, should have been centered on the island of Cuba, its casus belli. However, a few days later, the American Pacific Squadron, under Commodore Dewey, arrived off Manila Bay. This war was desired by the aggressors and anticipated by the Spanish squadron under Rear Admiral Montojo at its base in Cavite. The rebels prepared as best they could, but on May 1st, they were decisively defeated. The loss of the fleet galvanized the Filipino rebels, and the arrival of their leader, Emilio Aguinaldo, a few days later, transformed the guerrilla force into an armed group. While simultaneously awaiting aid from the Washington government, they quickly laid siege to Manila. In early July, the first American contingent arrived on the island of Luzon, and on August 13th, they launched an assault on the defensive perimeter of the Philippine capital, which culminated in the city's surrender the day after the armistice was signed between the two sides. Meanwhile, and for a long time afterward, until June 2nd, 1899, a handful of soldiers held out in the church of a small town called Baler. Incredulous at the surrender and undeterred, they had resisted for months in defense of a military post that was no longer theirs. They were the last of the Philippines.
