Stephen Jay Gould (September 10, 1941 -- May 20, 2002) was the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard University and the Keynote speaker and author for the conference. This conference was made possible by generous support from The Howard Gilman Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, The Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Foundation, and, finally, Ms. Caroline Williams.
