What Happened To Cockermouth's Railway? | Lost Railway Towns 43

Cockermouth is a town that many people visit near the Lake District, but few would realise it was once an important railway stop. In this episode of Lost Railway Towns, we explore the railway history of Cockermouth in Cumbria and uncover what remains of the lines that once connected the town to Workington, Keswick and Penrith. From the arrival of the Cockermouth and Workington Railway in 1847 to the later Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway, the town played a significant role in the transport network of North West England. Today, much of that railway heritage has disappeared. Former station sites have been redeveloped, sections of trackbed have been absorbed into the A66, and only scattered clues remain in the landscape. Join us as we trace the route through the town, visit surviving railway structures, explore the site of Cockermouth's vanished stations, and discover how industry, geography and changing transport patterns reshaped the town. Along the way we also look at Cockermouth itself, including its links to William Wordsworth, the River Cocker and River Derwent, the town's industrial heritage, brewing history, and the impact of flooding on this historic Cumbrian market town. If you enjoy railway history, local history, industrial archaeology, transport geography, lost railways, disused stations, heritage railways and hidden infrastructure, this is a fascinating story of how a place can change over time. What surprised you most about Cockermouth's railway history, and do you think more of its railway heritage should have been preserved? #Cockermouth #LostRailways #RailwayHistory #Cumbria #DisusedStations #IndustrialHeritage #LocalHistory #TransportHistory #Keswick #RailwayExploration #WobblyRunnerExploring #LostRailwayTowns ********* MERCH now available here - https://ko-fi.com/wobblyrunner/shop Become a channel member - https://www.youtube.com/wobblyrunner/...
