For centuries, we took it for granted that time was one-dimensional. Yet the history of ideas reveals something even more surprising. In ancient times, time was thought of as cyclical, an eternal return. Then, with Augustine, it became an arrow: born, flowing, and moving toward an end. With nineteenth-century mathematics, another revolution arrived. Riemann showed that space is not necessarily three-dimensional: it can have many dimensions, depending on the geometry that describes it. Shortly thereafter, with Einstein and Minkowski, time entered the geometric structure of the universe, becoming the fourth dimension of space-time. But then a fascinating question arises: if we can have multiple spatial dimensions, why should time have only one? When physicists try to generalize the fundamental equations of waves and fields to more temporal dimensions, strange things happen. Signal propagation changes, causality becomes more complex, and particle stability can break down. It's not mathematically impossible, but the universe we observe seems to function in a unique way with three spatial dimensions and one temporal one.
