Access to Nature Is a Human Right: Immigrant Safety and Outdoor Spaces | Thriving Outside, Together

Thriving Outside, Together is a summer webinar series from the Urban Parks and Green Space Workgroup of the America the Beautiful for All Coalition. In this first session, six local and national leaders make the case that conservation and immigration justice are not two separate issues, but one fight. When outdoor spaces are made safer for immigrants, they are made safer for everyone. So, what does it take to keep parks and trails open to all of us? Our panelists share stories and strategies from across the country: park activation in Albuquerque neighborhoods, the intersection of park equity and enforcement in California, the campaign that helped shut down a detention facility in a national preserve, New Mexico's Immigrant Safety Act, the national Nature Gap and what it means for immigrant families, and the long history of the US-Mexico border at Friendship Park. Each speaker closes with a concrete action you can take in your own community. Featuring: Baruk Campos, Executive Director, Together for Brothers (Albuquerque, NM) Pedro Hernandez, California State Director, GreenLatinos Sherman Neil, Campaign Director, Military Outdoors, Sierra Club Representative Angelica Rubio, New Mexico State Legislature (Las Cruces) Bren Spectre, Director of Communications and Advocacy, Justice Outside Dan Watman, Program Director, Friends of International Friendship Park (San Diego/Tijuana) This conversation is the first of our four-part summer 2026 series, in which our Urban Parks and Green Space Workgroup explores what it takes for everyone to thrive outside, together.
