The investigation was initiated following a whistleblower’s shocking claims, a former sanitation worker at the Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple, who alleged he was forced to dispose of hundreds of bodies, including women and minors, between 1995 and 2014. These bodies reportedly showed signs of sexual assault and violence. The SIT, led by Director General of Police Pronab Mohanty, includes senior officers like DIG M.N. Anucheth, DCP Soumyalatha, and SP Jitendra Kumar Dayama, with additional personnel from various districts. The complainant, a 48-year-old Dalit man, stated he was coerced under death threats to bury or burn bodies, many of which were women and girls showing signs of rape and murder. He fled Dharmasthala in 2014 after a relative was allegedly assaulted and has since been under the Witness Protection Scheme, 2018. He provided skeletal remains as evidence and offered to identify burial sites. The SIT began its probe on July 20, 2025, operating from the Dakshina Kannada district police office. On July 31, partial skeletal remains, including 15 bones (no skull), were found at the sixth of 13 identified burial sites in a forested area, marking a significant breakthrough. Excavations continue at other sites, with forensic experts and civic workers involved. A PAN card and a red torn blouse were reportedly recovered earlier, though the PAN card was linked to a man who died of jaundice and was cremated elsewhere. The allegations sparked nationwide outrage, reviving demands for justice in unresolved cases, such as the 2012 rape and murder of 17-year-old Sowjanya and the 2003 disappearance of MBBS student Ananya Bhat. Activists, including lawyer S. Balan, and the Karnataka State Commission for Women pushed for the SIT, citing systemic police failures. The temple authorities, led by the influential Heggade family, welcomed a “fair and transparent” investigation but faced scrutiny due to their regional influence.
