Inseparably linked to the Greek Revolution of 1821, this impressive piece of land stands proud in the heart of the Aegean. It is 150 km northeast of Piraeus and 80 km west of Chios town, and is also connected by ferry to Limnia, the port of Volissos in western Chios. It is mentioned by Homer as "Psyra" or "Psyria" and continuous human activity is evidenced since the Neolithic period through finds such as bronze swords, earrings and necklaces. The people of Psaria lived peacefully engaged in fishing and trade. They had informal privileges from the Ottomans and before the Revolution of 1821 the island was third in naval power after Hydra and Spetses, having managed to become rich and prosperous. In 1824, one of the most tragic moments in modern Greek history was written here. In the Catastrophe of Psara, the settlement was burned down and the inhabitants were massacred or sold to the slave markets of the east. Today, this historical memory is alive in every corner of the island, while the permanent residents are only 420. As you enter the port, the Psara Holocaust Memorial stands in an emblematic spot. Here, tribute is paid to the Psara people who sacrificed themselves for freedom, while offering a breathtaking view of the Aegean. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Psara and protector of sailors. The church dominates the port and is a point of reference for residents and visitors. The hill above the town of Psara is the historic black ridge of Dionysios Solomos or old castle, with ruins of a Hellenistic settlement. The only organized residential area of the island is the Fishermen's Town. Simple, clean and authentic, with low houses, narrow streets and traditional taverns serving fresh fish and local flavors. Lose yourself in the experience offered to you, discovering something of the history and maritime soul of this place. The small but very interesting Archaeological and Historical Museum of Psara presents exhibits from antiquity to the revolution of 1821, which highlight the maritime and cultural heritage of the island. The most famous beach on the island is Lazareta, near the town. With clear, turquoise waters and a sandy coast, ideal for relaxation and easy access. As you can see, the waters are among the clearest and crystal clear you will find in the European Union. Kato Gialos is an organized pebble beach with calm waters, ideal for families. It is located near the port and offers easy access and shade. Lakka beach to the west and Limnos and Limnonari beaches to the east are additional options. It is worth visiting Antipsara, a small uninhabited island with exotic beaches and turquoise waters, accessible by boat. Psara is ideal for a quiet holiday, away from mass tourism. Here you will enjoy swimming in clear seas, seafood snacks by the sea and authentic hospitality. An island of memory, authenticity and inner peace that invites you to slow down, feel and connect with the essence of the Aegean.
