LUDDINGTON AND HALDENBY: North Lincolnshire Parish #16 of 56

When Cornelius Vermuyden drained the Isle of Axholme, he removed productive marshland and the River Don. Controlled flooding of the Isle (the process we’ve met before known as warping) improved the fertility of the soil. Steam pumps made the drainage of the Isle effective. This led to a growth in farming in the area and an increase in population. The need for labour was partly met by the migration of Irish workers to this village, following the Irish Famine of the 1840s. Providence Row in the village, a collection of earth floor cottages, housed Irish labourers until well into the 1930s.A quiet residential village now, it has few amenities. There used to be a post office and three public houses here until the late 1900s. I really struggled with finding information about this village generally speaking. There really isn’t much out there to go on. Luckily I have some history of my own with this place. The village held a music festival in 2006 – Luddstock – which I attended! I’ve included some of my photographs from that day, and I got permission from the band Leatherat (one of the bands that played that day) to use a song of theirs here! The parish church is in fields to the north-east of the village centre. A Grade II listed structure, this was built in 1855 in the Gothic Revival style. It’s made of sandstone and limestone ashlar masonry, with the roofs clad in Welsh slate. Internally, there are several English church monuments which predate the construction, including a white marble Roccoco tablet to the Worsop family dating from 1758 Then there’s a deserted medieval settlement to talk about. I don’t think I did bad really given how little I found about LUDDINGTON AND HALDENBY. **** My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.
