Tokyo Metro, Toshiba, and others have begun a trial in Japan for touchless ticket gates using a smartphone's Bluetooth functionality. Reporter Ogawa Tomomi: "By turning on your smartphone's Bluetooth and passing through the ticket gate, you can pass through touchlessly." The system works by attaching an antenna to an existing ticket gate and communicating with the smartphone via Bluetooth to authenticate passage. Sixty Tokyo Metro employees will participate in the trial, which will verify the extent to which passage can be authenticated and ease of use. While biometric authentication, such as facial recognition, has been put into practical use for touchless ticket gates, this is Japan's first trial using Bluetooth. "Once facial information is leaked, it's difficult to retrieve," said Shoko Nishikawa, Chief of the Transportation Systems Division at Tokyo Metro Railway Headquarters.
