Yes, a house can have a green, vibrant, and beautiful roof. Forget that little roof of the house we drew in school; what our gardener Carol Costa will show you in this video is that it's possible to have plants growing on a house, bringing thermal comfort and great beauty. The first step is to reinforce the structure: imagine that a normal house has a calculation at the time it is built to support the weight of a slab and tiles. For a rooftop garden, it will also have to support the substrate, the plants, and all the water that accumulates to keep the greenery beautiful – in the roof in the video, the structure was reinforced to support an extra 250 kilos, that's for each square meter! After reinforcement, waterproofing is another very important factor: every corner needs to be guaranteed to ensure there won't be even a tiny crack for water to enter. Vulcanization and a well-made screed are essential to guarantee a seal. Of course, like any roof, metal screens are needed in the gutters to support the substrate and ensure that water drains without problems. With the roof reinforced and waterproofed, it's time for planting: drainage layer, membrane, and a very light and porous substrate are added. The trick here is to ensure that a "plantable" surface exists on the roof, but a very thin one, about 25 cm. The key is the choice of plants. Landscape designer Brenda Black, from Atmosphera Plantas & Paisagismo, chose the species that would make up the green roof. Plants that like plenty of sun, are resistant, and some native species, such as the Bahia cassia (Senna polyphylla), were taken into consideration. The roof functions like a well-maintained garden: it needs upkeep to keep the plants that have adapted well, replace those that are looking sad, fertilize, and prune. In the video, Carol shows the very special group that participated in the replanting and maintenance of the green roof – only experts!
