10/1/1967 NBC TV broadcast audio of Twins-Red Sox in Boston final day of season Curt Gowdy

This is audio from the Oct. 1, 1967 NBC TV broadcast of Twins-Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston on the final day of the season. It skips only the top of the 7th (no scoring) + two outs in top of 8th, but has Carl Yastrzemski throwing out Bob Allison for the third out. Alas, no complete-game video of this is believed to exist. Announcers: Curt Gowdy, Pee Wee Reese, Sandy Koufax Detroit correspondents: Tony Kubek, Jim Simpson Never before had three teams had a shot at the American League pennant on the final day of the season; this is the NBC Sports broadcast of the Minnesota-Boston game, with the winner earning at least a tie for the pennant. Updates are also given from Game 1 in Detroit; if the Tigers were to win both games of a doubleheader over the Angels, they'd clinch at least a tie. If they were to lose one, the Sox or Twins would wear the crown. Boston needed a win to continue its Impossible Dream season, and trailed, 2-0, until the sixth. That's when pitcher Jim Lonborg started things off with a bunt single. Clutch Sox hitting, including Yastrzemski's bases-loaded two-run single, and shoddy Twins fielding produced five runs. Lonborg allowed another run in the eighth, but Yaz's great throw nailed Allison at second for the final out of that inning. When Lonborg got Rich Rollins to pop to shortstop Rico Petrocelli, fans stormed the field, mobbing Lonborg. Eventually all the Sox got back to the clubhouse and listened to the Tigers lose Game 2, putting 100-1 shot Boston in the World Series vs. the Cardinals! The great Curt Gowdy and the folksy Pee Wee Reese might be my two favorite baseball announcers and Gowdy covers the first part of the game, hands off to Reese, and then takes the microphone again late, enabling the former Sox play-by-play man to call the final out and celebration. A couple of observations: When Gowdy asks Reese in the pregame what he thinks of it all, he says, "I think it's wonderful and I'm just happy that I can be a part of it. I don't know about the players being a little nervous, but old Pee Wee is just being up here." That perfectly captured everyone's mood. Also, I've never heard anything like the continuous roar of the Fenway crowd throughout the sixth inning; it still gives me chills. Box score in comments. I just hadn't seen it on YouTube, and posted it for historical and educational purposes and for those who will enjoy it as much as I did.
