Entrepreneur Sergio Zimerman founded Petz, formerly Pet Center Marginal, in mid-2002. Since then, the company has gained ground and reached the position of the largest pet retailer in Brazil. Its initial public offering (IPO) took place in September 2020. However, the harsh combination of high interest rates and high household debt plunged the sector into crisis last year. Zimerman is betting—literally—that this phase is temporary. The businessman increased his stake in Petz to 30% in the last three months and claims to have invested "practically all his assets in the company." In an interview with VEJA S/A, the retailer's founder explains his optimism for the future, discusses plans for 2024, the possible merger with Cobasi, and criticizes Congress and the Central Bank.
