Alien vs. Predator (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Activision's 1993 beat 'em up for the Super NES, Alien vs. Predator. Played through on the default settings. The Alien movies are among my all-time favorites, and the two Predators are pretty entertaining as well. I'm not really sure that they go together so well at this point, though. They've been brought together for many games, and most of them have been absolute disasters (the Jaguar game gets a huge exception here). This one isn't a disaster, per se, but seriously, with such bad-ass licenses at hand, this is weak. It looks alright most of the time (and some of the backgrounds look downright amazing - the bodies with chest-bursters leaping out of them are pretty disturbing in how detailed they are), and the soundtrack carries a good beat. AvP's primary screw-up lies in how ineptly the fighting system has been implemented. The punch is virtually useless: every enemy in the game (besides the chest bursters and the queen) can be taken care of by knocking then against the edge of the screen and sliding or jump-kicking over and over again until you hear the death scream. It feels like a cheap way to play, until you realize you'll never get through the game otherwise. Is this really how they designed this to work? And thank God I got into the groove of the Queen's pattern when I did. One or two hits more and I would've been out, but just take that as evidence of how the well the system "works." AvP is still a game I go back to from time-to-time, and with each play I hope to find some magical spark or something I'd never noticed before that would make things all make sense. Alas, after 20 years, I'm doubting it's there. What a disappointment. ____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
