Becoming a Better Farmer Starts With Becoming a Better Person
Becoming a Better Farmer Starts With Becoming a Better Person People often ask, "How do you become a better farmer?" The answer usually isn't another product, another practice, or another piece of equipment. It's becoming a better person. That may sound simple, but it's a lesson shared by many of agriculture's most respected leaders. The farms may be different. The crops may be different. But the common thread is the same: personal growth leads to professional growth. Success Starts With Character The qualities that make someone a better farmer are often the same qualities that make them a better parent, spouse, employee, employer, or friend. Patience. Integrity. Humility. Kindness. Intentionality. Those traits influence every decision made on the farm—from how people are treated to how problems are solved. As one farmer put it, "When you improve yourself, everything else tends to follow." Learning to Separate Preference From Principle Leadership often means working alongside family, employees, or eventually the next generation. That isn't always easy. One question can be surprisingly helpful: "Is this a sin, or is it just my personal preference?" In other words, is something actually wrong, or is it simply not the way you would have done it? That mindset changes how we lead. Instead of becoming frustrated over every imperfect job, we begin focusing more on people than perfection. The Next Generation Is Watching Children naturally want to do what their parents do. They want to ride in the tractor, help in the shop, feed livestock, and be part of the operation. The challenge isn't getting kids interested in farming. It's making sure farming remains something they enjoy. If every mistake is met with frustration, eventually the excitement disappears. But when patience replaces perfection, those same moments become opportunities to teach. The next generation doesn't need perfect parents. They need parents who are willing to teach, encourage, and let them learn. Investing Where It Matters Most Years ago, someone asked Warren Buffett what the best investment was. His answer wasn't a particular stock or business. It was yourself. Invest in your character. Invest in your faith. Live with integrity. Everything else has a way of following. Those lessons apply just as much in agriculture as they do anywhere else. Stewardship Begins at Home It's easy to dream about the next farm, the next piece of equipment, or the improvements we'd make if we owned more ground. The harder question is this: Have we cared for what we already have with the same passion? Good stewardship isn't measured by how much land someone owns. It's measured by how faithfully they care for what's already been entrusted to them. The Harvest That Matters Most Yields matter. Profitability matters. Efficiency matters. But those things are temporary. The legacy left behind—the way people were treated, the values passed to the next generation, and the character demonstrated every day—will outlast every crop that's ever harvested. Because becoming a better farmer doesn't start with farming. It starts with becoming a better human being.
