Cold War Nuclear Depth Bombs vs Soviet Nuclear Submarines | Sea Power

Experience Cold War naval warfare in Sea Power as we take our first look at the British WE.177A nuclear depth bomb and its role in anti-submarine warfare (ASW). In this scenario, two Soviet Echo II SSGNs, guided by a Tu-95 Bear reconnaissance aircraft, surface to launch their long-range SS-N-3 Shaddock anti-ship missiles against a Royal Navy HMS Hermes carrier battle group. Although a Fairey Gannet AEW detects the submarines on radar during the missile launch, they quickly dive beneath the waves and disappear. With the submarines over 100 miles away, helicopters and surface escorts cannot intercept them in time. The Royal Navy's only realistic response is a fixed-wing strike aircraft armed with the WE.177A variable-yield nuclear depth bomb.
