Who lived in a house like this? The Great British Council House in the 1950s at Beamish Museum
In this weeks video I step back in time to visit 3 different types of social housing from the 1950s at the time in the 20th century when the building and provision of such housing was at its peak. I visited an example of a council house, these houses were built by the local authority to provide affordable houses to low income families. I visited a police house, a local authority built house let by the police to provide accommodation for their staff. Finally I visit an aged miners cottage, provided by a housing association for the retirement of miners and their families. These houses in the 1950s village at Beamish museum are a beautiful example of the types of housing millions of normal people lived in during the mid 20th century in the United Kingdom. I of course also enjoyed hearing about the stories and lives of the people who may have lived there. I hope it might spark some memories for you too. I am Lucy, a social historian, and your guide around these buildings. I film, edit, research and script all my videos myself and enjoy you coming with me on my adventures. If you enjoy history and visiting interesting places please consider subscribing, it's free and really encourages me. #socialhistoryofengland #socialhistory #socialhousing #councilhousing #welfarestate #heritage #heritagepreservation #workingclasshistory #museumvlog #midcentury #midcenturyhome #midcenturydesign #museumexploration #visitengland #countydurham #england #historyseeker #throughlucyslens
