About the village: https://historica-web.com/column/1815/ We have continued our exploration of a village in Shiga Prefecture. Once a prosperous mining community, this Goya is now an uninhabited settlement with no permanent residents. I learned of the existence of this village when I read a book about its history written by a native of the village. I then made personal contact with the author, and this time I actually went to the site to meet him. He graciously welcomed us as outsiders and invited us to lunch. We talked a lot about the current situation and future of these villages. It was a day that convinced us once again of the necessity of keeping records of such places and disseminating them to as many people as possible.
