History of Bitcoin, Part 9: Genesis & the Curveball 2020
On February 21, 2020, I was standing in a London airport with the best two days of my professional life still ringing in my ears, and every television bolted to the ceiling was showing footage from China. Seventeen days earlier, at 1:35 in the morning, Bitcoin had quietly had its handcuffs removed. Nobody in that conference hall knew it, but the best day of the ecosystem's life had already happened. The Meat: In this cornerstone episode of Kurt's Podcast, we break down The Written History of Bitcoin, Part 9: Genesis and the Curveball, covering 2020, the year Bitcoin got its full instruction set back and the world removed every condition that would have let anyone use it. We start at block 620,538, where the Genesis upgrade took the block cap out of the consensus rules and handed it to miners as a policy setting, restored the original Satoshi opcodes, and lifted the script limits that a decade of civil war had been fought over. You will get the dated iceberg: nearly a thousand builders at Old Billingsgate three weeks before the world closed, and the working applications they demoed. Black Thursday, where the "uncorrelated hedge" correlated perfectly, where liquidations on one venue exceeded that venue's entire pre-crash open interest, and where a chat window called the Trollbox knocked the biggest exchange in Bitcoin offline for twenty-five minutes. The Federal Reserve adding roughly $1.1 trillion in twenty-eight days, taken straight from its own H.4.1 releases. The halving at block 630,000, and the message F2Pool wrote into block 629,999, the last block of the old subsidy, quoting the New York Times on a $2.3 trillion injection eleven years after Satoshi quoted The Times on a second bailout for banks. Ethereum's fees going from $1.5 million a month to $166 million a month the instant it got popular. Bitcoin Cash splitting a second time on November 15, exactly two years to the day after the SV fork, with Amaury Séchet left holding the minority chain and the 8 percent. And Craig Wright's bonded courier finally arriving with a list of 16,404 addresses and no private keys in it. The Divergent Factor: While everyone else remembers 2020 as the year Bitcoin went institutional, we document what that actually cost. We tell the Genesis story with the honest "almost," straight from the specification: P2SH removed rather than restored, four opcodes still disabled, and every "unlimited" rule still shipping a finite default that a miner has to raise by hand. We print the counterpoint that as much as 96 percent of BSV transactions in early 2020 came from a single weather app. We give the Proximal Origin authors their own defense in the same breath as the record against them. Judge Reinhart's forgery and perjury findings are quoted from the filed order itself rather than from press coverage of it, and the June 1, 2021 trial date comes straight off the docket. 145 footnotes, each linking a primary source wherever one exists.
