Spinal anesthesia, or lumbar or subarachnoid anesthesia, is an anesthesia technique that involves administering a small amount of local anesthetic into the spinal canal with a thin needle. The result is anesthesia and complete paralysis from the navel down, which occurs within a few minutes and disappears after about two hours. It is indicated for obstetric and gynecological surgeries (cesarean section, hysterectomy), urological surgeries (prostate and bladder), and all lower limb procedures, especially orthopedic surgeries.
