A backwater with half a boot's depth was just what I needed. I unloaded my gear there and moved the boat further away. 🎣 I quickly pulled up a camouflage net and set up a blind. I dropped the decoy—and off we go! 🦆💨 🔥 The duck is a fine fellow! She started working right away: periodically quacking loudly, showing everyone how beautiful she is and demanding attention. 😍📢 🎯 The first drake swooped in about twenty minutes later. With a loud "chewing" sound, he landed right next to the decoy. I stood up, and as soon as he took off, I got the hungry duck with a lucky hit. 💥 What a great start to the season! 🦆✅ I picked him up from the ice and back to the shelter. ☕ During the break, I managed to sip coffee from my thermos. 🔥 A pair of ducks flew in from behind me. They landed nearby, but the drake never swam toward my duck. 😕 The water was receding before my eyes, and the decoy ended up at the edge of the sand, not in the center of the bay. 🦆 Another drake flew by. He passed over the duck twice, but didn't land—I think he spotted me. 👀 And when the duck later settled, I didn't wait: I caught him right as he was taking off, not letting him land on the water. 💥 He dropped like a stone onto the ice. 🧊 🚤 I decided to end the hunt there and started packing.
