The starting point is the classic difference between the physical states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Solids have a defined shape and volume; liquids have a defined volume but assume the shape of the container; gases have neither a defined shape nor volume. Based on this distinction, liquids and gases are grouped into the category of fluids. A fluid is characterized by being soft and highly deformable, unlike solids, which resist deformation. When a small force is applied to a solid, it tends to maintain its shape, returning to its original state after the force is removed, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. A fluid, however, deforms continuously under the action of any tangential force, no matter how small. To illustrate this behavior, the lesson uses the experiment of two plates. In the case of a solid between the plates, a tangential force temporarily deforms the material. In contrast, a fluid between these plates deforms continuously while the force is applied, without returning to its original state. Another important concept is the principle of adhesion: a fluid adheres to the surface with which it is in contact, acquiring its velocity. Thus, the velocity of the fluid next to the moving upper plate is equal to that of the upper plate, while next to the fixed lower plate it is zero. The formal definition presented in the lesson is that a fluid is a substance that deforms continuously when subjected to a constant tangential force. Unlike solids, which resist tangential forces up to a certain limit, fluids never reach a new state of static equilibrium while this force is present.
