IYEOKA Performance Rehearsal Sessions #1: THIS BLACK GIRL (feat. Jeff Robinson)

THIS BLACK GIRL is a celebration of Black girlhood, friendship, family, and the beautiful intersections between music and legacy. Featuring saxophonist Jeff Robinson, a longtime friend, mentor, collaborator, and jam-session legend, this performance arrives during an extraordinary season in his family’s life. In the summer of 2026, Jeff watches his son, Miles Robinson, live out a dream on the world’s biggest football stage as the FIFA World Cup comes to the United States. As one father journeys across the country, another story unfolds in a room during a historic heat unprecedented heatwave, the performance centers on daughters, memory, and the power of seeing Black girls become exactly who they were meant to be. Performed with the ukulele, voice, and Jeff’s soulful saxophone, captured from the lens of her daughter, THIS BLACK GIRL honors the villages that raise us, the friendships that sustain us, and the generations that continue to inspire us to keep going. For decades, Jeff Robinson and IYEOKA have shared stages, rehearsals, and spontaneous jam sessions throughout Boston, Cambridge and cities across USA. This collaboration is a reflection of that history—a musical conversation rooted in trust, artistry, and community. The song is part of the UNOGBO project, a body of work exploring ancestry, motherhood, survival, memory, and the enduring beauty of home. “May every Black girl know that she is both the dream and the continuation of countless prayers that came before her.” Thank you for supporting independent music, poetry, and griot wok.
