SEGESTA

Segesta was an ancient Elymian city located in northwestern Sicily. The old city stands on Mount Barbaro, in the municipality of Calatafimi-Segesta, within the free municipal consortium of Trapani, a few kilometers from Alcamo and Castellammare del Golfo. Within the archaeological park, it houses a Doric temple and a Hellenistic theater, partly carved into the hill's rock. Further excavations have uncovered a Hellenistic-Roman town and a medieval village. The Segestans used the city of Castellammare del Golfo as a port. The archaeological area of Segesta became an archaeological park in 2013. Segesta was destroyed by the Vandals in the 5th century and never rebuilt on its former scale.
