Father Abraham had many Sons

Romans 4:9-16 | Father Abraham Had Many Sons This week Pastor David Morris continues his study in Romans with a message titled "Father Abraham Had Many Sons" from Romans 4:9-16. Paul presses a question that mattered enormously in his day but feels distant in ours: how are non-Jews connected to Abraham? The answer turns out to be a matter of salvation itself — and it leads to one liberating big idea: God's blessings to Abraham are available to all of us. Pastor David works through three movements of Paul's argument: Timing — God declares His people righteous before their works. Abraham was counted righteous in Genesis 15, at least 14 years before he was circumcised in Genesis 17. Faith precedes works, not the other way around (vv. 9–10) Purpose — God unites His people through the righteousness of faith. God deliberately designed that gap in time so that Abraham would become the father of all who believe — circumcised and uncircumcised, Jew and Gentile alike (vv. 11–12) Gracious Promise — God guarantees His promises on grace. Because the law only brings wrath, the promise depends on faith, so that it might rest on grace and be guaranteed to all of Abraham's offspring (vv. 13–16) Along the way, Pastor David draws out three reasons this doctrine matters today: unity within the church, a deeper appreciation of our Old Testament, and richer worship. He also reminds us that Christianity maintains an essential connection to Judaism — the Jewish Jesus of Nazareth is our Messiah, the seed of the woman who came through Abraham. The big idea: God's blessings to Abraham are available to all of us — through faith, not works. Father Abraham had many sons.
