Perspective: Tougher Action Against Paper Leaks | 24 July, 2026

After days of protests over examination paper leaks, there appears to be significant movement on multiple fronts. The government has to compensate the families of those who allegedly died by suicide in the wake of the paper leak controversy and has assured that no FIRs will be filed against students who participated in peaceful protests. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also reiterated the government's commitment to taking tough action against those responsible for paper leaks. He has also announced setting up of fast track courts for swift justice in paper leak cases. Amid these developments, activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his hunger strike, signalling that the government's assurances have opened the door for dialogue. While these announcements have raised hopes, they also bring several important questions into focus. Will tougher laws and stricter accountability finally put an end to the paper leak menace? What structural reforms are needed to make examinations more secure and transparent?
