E-Z isomerism (or geometric isomerism) is a very important aspect that is often overlooked. However, it is a fundamental point for stereochemistry and, in general, for naming compounds that have one or more double bonds. The first step is to determine whether E-Z isomerism actually occurs. To do this, you need to determine whether the two substituents bonded to the two carbons of the double bond are different. Then, the second step is to determine which groups/atoms have the highest priority, following the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rules. Finally, depending on where the high-priority substituents are located, it will be an (E) or (Z) isomer.
