Life Inside an Active VOLCANO 🌋 | FOGO Island, Cape Verde Documentary
How do people live inside an active volcano? On Fogo Island, Cape Verde, entire villages have been buried by lava—yet families keep rebuilding and returning to the shadow of Pico do Fogo, one of Africa's most active volcanoes. While Cape Verde captured the world's attention at the FIFA World Cup, incredible stories unfold on the island. In this documentary, I travel deep into Chã das Caldeiras, the volcanic heart of Fogo Island, to discover how people survive eruptions, produce award-winning wine from volcanic soil, preserve centuries-old traditions, and continue building lives where nature can change everything overnight. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Fogo is one of the most extraordinary islands in Cape Verde. Dominated by the towering Pico do Fogo volcano, the island has experienced numerous eruptions throughout its history, including the devastating 2014 eruption that destroyed large parts of Chã das Caldeiras. During this journey, I stay at Casa Marisa, one of the most iconic lodges in the crater, meet local entrepreneur Jojoe and discover how volcanic wines are produced in one of the harshest environments imaginable. I visit Casa Ramiro to experience the beautiful sounds of Mazurka music, share a traditional Djagacida meal at Pedra Burkan, and learn how families continue to rebuild homes on top of lava flows that once buried entire villages. From volcanic vineyards and lava-covered villages to cultural traditions passed down through generations, Fogo Island reveals a side of Cape Verde few visitors ever see. 🎬 Featured in this documentary: 🌋 Chã das Caldeiras 🌋 Pico do Fogo Volcano 🍷 Volcanic Wines of Fogo 🏡 Casa Marisa 🎵 Mazurka at Casa Ramiro 🍲 Traditional Djagacida 🌋 Pedra Burkan 🏘️ São Filipe 🎯 Travel by Dart is a cinematic travel series where every journey begins with a blindfolded dart throw at a world map. 👇 Subscribe: / @travelbydarttv The breakdown of this Travel by Dart Fogo documentary: 00:00 Fogo video start 01:29 Welcome to Chas des Caldeiras 02:38 Surviving the volcano 09:18 Mazurka at Casa Ramiro 12:22 Volcanic Wine 16:30 Djagacida at Pedra Burkan 19:45 Sao Filipe 22:19 the Dart Throw Here's an overview of the subjects in this Cape Verde documentary: 🌋 Chã das Caldeiras Chã das Caldeiras is a remarkable community located inside the enormous crater of the Fogo volcano. Despite repeated eruptions destroying homes, farms and infrastructure, residents continue to rebuild and return. The village represents one of the most powerful examples of resilience in Cape Verde, where life is shaped by both the danger and the opportunities created by the volcano. 🌋 Pico do Fogo Volcano Pico do Fogo is the highest mountain in Cape Verde, reaching approximately 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) above sea level. It is an active stratovolcano and one of the most prominent volcanic landmarks in Africa. Its eruptions have repeatedly transformed the island's landscape, most recently in 2014, when lava flows destroyed much of Chã das Caldeiras and surrounding communities. 🏡 Casa Marisa Casa Marisa is one of the most well-known guesthouses in Chã das Caldeiras and has become a symbol of the community's determination to rebuild after volcanic eruptions. Located inside the volcanic crater itself, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience daily life in one of the world's most unusual inhabited volcanic environments. 🎵 Mazurka Mazurka is a traditional musical style that arrived in Cape Verde through European influences during the colonial era. Originally associated with Central European folk dances, it evolved into a uniquely Cape Verdean expression, blending local rhythms and cultural influences. Today, it remains an important part of Fogo's musical heritage and community celebrations. 🍲 Djagacida Djagacida is one of Cape Verde's most beloved traditional dishes. Typically prepared with rice, beans, vegetables and meat or fish, it reflects the resourcefulness and communal spirit of Cape Verdean cuisine. On Fogo, preparing and sharing Djagacida remains an important social tradition that brings families and communities together. 🍷 Fogo Wines Fogo produces some of the most unique wines in Africa. Grapevines grow directly in volcanic soil under harsh climatic conditions, benefiting from mineral-rich terrain created by centuries of eruptions. Despite limited water and challenging growing conditions, local winemakers have developed a distinctive wine industry that has become one of the island's most celebrated achievements. 🏘️ São Filipe São Filipe is the capital of Fogo Island. Known for its colorful sobrados (historic colonial mansions), black volcanic beaches and rich cultural heritage, the city serves as the economic and administrative center of the island while preserving much of its historic character. #Fogo #CapeVerde #PicoDoFogo #Volcano #Documentary #TravelByDart #ChaDasCaldeiras #Africa #IslandLife #TravelDocumentary #VolcanicWine #SaoFilipe #CasaMarisa
