The Spanish Empire was one of the major powers of the Modern Age, establishing a system of intercontinental dominion. For more than four centuries, its territories spanned Europe, America, Africa, and Asia, connected by an extensive commercial and administrative network. Its origin is usually placed in 1492, with the conquest of Granada and the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America, initiating a process of unprecedented expansion. In the 16th century, Spain consolidated its hegemony with the annexation of Portugal (1580-1640), the creation of the viceregal model, and trade routes such as the Manila Galleon. The exploitation of mines such as Potosí financed the imperial structure, although it generated inflation and dependence on American silver. However, constant wars and internal conflicts precipitated its decline. In the 19th century, the severe monarchical crisis, coupled with the wave of emancipation, dismantled Spanish authority in its American possessions, which began to gain independence. The final blow came in 1898 with the loss of its last colonies after the Spanish-American War. Despite its disappearance, the empire's legacy lives on in the language, institutions, and cultural exchanges that shaped global history.
