Greater Anglia Trains at Broxbourne on September 27th 2024
2nd visit to Broxbourne on the West Anglia Main Line as well as the junction for Hertford East services Featuring services all by Greater Anglia plus one freighter Broxbourne was opened in 1840 by Northern and Eastern Railway as the terminus of the line up from Stratford before it was extended a year later to Latton Mill (Harlow) in August 1841. Firstly was originally opened as Broxbourne and Hoddesdon which the present station serves both nearby towns of Broxbourne and Hoddesdon however overtime the Hoddesdon name was dropped although still remains unknown when that took place eventhough the town of Hoddesdon is also served by another station of Rye House that being on the Hertford East Line. The present Grade II Listed station building dates replaced the former station buildings in 1959 with the present ones designed by H.H. Powell and T Rainer. For a long time there was no ticket barriers at the station however it wasn't until 2011 when ticket barriers were installed which was around the same time the platforms were extended to 12 cars however the longest trains that call here nowadays are 10 cars mainly 2 pairs of 5 car Class 720 Aventras The four platforms enable some flexibility with services calling at and also enable non stopping services to and from Stansted Airport to overtake which is only 1 of 2 overtaking points on the line the other being two stops Northwards at Harlow Town. Services to and from Bishops Stortford, Cambridge North and Hertford East call here. Platform 1 can be used by Terminating services which only occur in morning or evening peaks which enter a reversing siding beyond here whilst the junction of the Hertford East Line diverges further to the North towards Rye House. Nowadays all Greater Anglia Services are provided by Class 720 Aventras and Class 745 Flirts The Class 745 Flirts on the West Anglia Main Line do most of the Stansted Express services to and from Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street however in recent years with services being restored to pre-pandemic 1 every 15 minutes meant that some services are provided by a pair of Class 720 Aventras. The Class 720 Aventras provide services from Stratford to Bishops Stortford, London Liverpool Street to Hertford East, Cambridge North and Monday - Friday early morning and evening peak Ely services with the only exception at weekends if Great Northern and Thameslink services via Royston aren't running due to engineering works. They replaced the Class 317s which retired in July 2022 whilst the Class 379s were withdrawn in February 2022 however it wasn't until March 2024 when the lease holder of Porterbrook took over the lease from Akiem Rail and at the time of filming are at Great Northern which are due to enter back into service in Late 2024 / Early 2025.
