The goblets passed from hand to gauntleted hand, Through coloured glass the candlelight didst pour, And laughter filled the hall as few things can In fourteen seventy-five's most golden hour. If thou wouldst rest as those great knights did rest, When feasting followed ceremony and prayer — Then here is music for thy evening quest, Five hundred years of warmth still lingers there. Come thou to rest, to feast, or find thy peace — Within these stones, all weariness doth cease. After the great ceremony of the Order of the Garter, the Knights of Windsor would retire to the great hall for a feast. Harpers and lutenists played while servants carried platters of food through gothic arched doorways. The same stone walls that had held solemn prayer an hour before now rang with laughter and music.
