Documentary: Mak Yong Folks Lore and Everyday Lives

SYNOPSIS This documentary tracks the attempts of the descendants and practitioners of the Kumpulan Sri Temenggung to sustain the Mak Yong as one of the main art of Malay dance performed for the Malay Raja and aristocrats. Mak Yong is also known as an art that is infused with musical accompaniment and the incantations invoking the call for performance of the players and performers. Following the winds of change in the political scenario of Kelantan in 1991, Mak Yong confronted challenging times in trying to push forward the Malay arts agenda. Established in 1969, Kumpulan Sri Temenggung became well-known as the proponent of the Malay grace of the Seri Panggung, The Mak Yong Diva – Puan Khatijah Awang. Although forgotten by the masses, the Seri Temenggung is actively performing the Mak Yong for academic study and for the arts.
