Professor Egídio stated, in a recently published article, that Brazilians are aging poorly, which is not a "privilege" unique to Brazil, and that we can expect to spend ten years of old age with poor health or some degree of disability if there is no prevention throughout the life cycle. He showed how this already impacts, or will impact, the Brazilian health system and discussed how we can change this reality, which is leading to an elderly population in worrying health conditions. He argued how it's possible to talk about healthy longevity when a resident of the Pinheiros neighborhood in São Paulo has a life expectancy of 82 years, while another from the Anhanguera District, in the same city, has a life expectancy of only 58.
