The beach at Blausteinsee lake in Eschweiler was packed when the 6-year-old boy disappeared. Hundreds of people watched the rescue workers, anxiously awaiting news of the boy's condition. Simone Dierlich, herself a mother of two sons, said: "The fire department and the police arrived. We all thought, 'What's going on?' But I immediately thought someone must have drowned. But I didn't think it was a child. I was expecting an adult. And of course, it was a shock because we all had to get away from the beach, we all had to go to the back." The parents were at the lake with their child yesterday evening. According to RTL WEST, the boy is Syrian. Around 7 p.m., the boy apparently just wanted to quickly wash his hands in the water. Suddenly, he was gone. The parents and other beachgoers searched for the child at first. After fifteen minutes, they alerted the fire department. More than 120 rescue workers were then deployed. Stefan Preuß of the Eschweiler fire department said: "We didn't know if the child was in the water." That's why we searched the water with boats, with teams of foot along the shore and in the wooded area, and later also with drones and thermal imaging cameras." Two hours after his disappearance, rescue workers found the boy dead in the lake. Why the 6-year-old fell into the water is still unclear. It is also unclear whether the parents neglected their duty of supervision. Many questions remain completely unanswered. The police are investigating. The public prosecutor's office has opened a death investigation and ordered an autopsy of the deceased child.
