Polo Hofer – Das Leben der Schweizer Musiklegende | Doku | SRF Dok

Polo Hofer is a Swiss music legend. He founded a new style of folk music and is Switzerland's most famous rock musician. Great successes as well as devastating blows of fate have marked his life. Now, Polo Hofer wants to record his last CD and then slow down. What kind of person is this Polo Hofer, perceived as a friend of the people? A year ago, he collapsed: Polo Hofer could no longer move or speak. "I only survived because my wife Alice was with me and immediately called an ambulance," the dialect rock star recalls today. In the hospital, doctors discovered that the soon-to-be 70-year-old had a stomach ulcer. For years, his failing health has repeatedly made headlines. At one point, it was nodules on his vocal cords, then acute pancreatitis. “I’ve fallen off the wagon four times now, but I don’t want to get old,” says the self-confessed pothead and wine lover, whose life has been marked by intoxication, disillusionment, elation, and setbacks. The uncrowned king of dialect rock was the voice of the hippies, a provocateur and clown who has been on stage for 50 years. His songs have long since become part of the national consciousness, and his lyrics resonate with credibility and authenticity. On stage or in company, he is always the perfect entertainer, a walking encyclopedia with an elephantine memory, from which he can summon anecdotes and jokes at will. But when is he playing a role, and when does his true self reveal itself? Who is actually hiding behind the persona of Polo Brand, born Urs Hofer in Interlaken in 1945? In the documentary, people who have known the star for decades don’t mince words. They offer intimate insights that are moving, amusing, but far from flattering. And of course, Polo speaks candidly about himself, aging, his successes, his failures, and, naturally, his music. He wants to record one last album before dedicating himself to his second passion: painting. Filmmaker Hanspeter Bäni spent over six months following Switzerland's most famous rock musician. The result is a multifaceted portrait of a man who can be sensitive yet ruthless, intelligent and humorous, and above all, someone who likes to go against the grain.
